Phnom Penh, 05 September 2007:
Mith Samlanh’s Child Rights team met a 15 year old boy who was living at the front of the Royal Palace. The boy explained that his parents had died when he was 4 years old and he was sent to live with his grandmother. His grandmother forced him to work on her farm, even though he was very young and she would beat him. After living there for a while, he decided to run away to Phnom Penh.
He lived on the streets and met a gang who forced him to earn money to pay them. If he didn’t earn money, they would beat him. The Child Rights team provided him with some counseling and he decided that he wanted to go and study at Mith Samlanh. |

August, 2007: Media Partner Case Study:
In August, 2007 the ChildSafe management informed one of their ChildSafe media partners about an advertisement in their publication that promoted a convicted child rapist. Based on information the team gathered, the team realized that a practitioner, who was advertising in the magazine, was found guilty and sentenced to two years' imprisonment for the rape of five boys aged 14 to 16 years of age. His sentence was reduced and he only served five months at T3 prison in Phnom Penh. This took place between the months of July and November, 1995.
From a ChildSafe perspective, he is considered a child-sex offender and is considered a possible threat to the young population we work with. Our media partner responded positively by removing Dr. Scott’s information from their publication. |

Siem Reap, 3 June 2007:
I am 12 years old. I have been tortured seriously by my father. My mum is dead. I was forced by my father to sell the souvenirs or beg the money from the tourists. If I have no money for him to drink the alcohol or for playing card, he fought me terribly. I asked many neighbors to help me, but no one can help me because my father did not listen to my neighbors. On 03/06/2007, I met with ChildSafe tuk-tuk while he brought the tourist to temple, and I asked him to help me. The ChildSafe Tuk-Tuk called the ChildSafe team and he informed Friends-International team that he met a very small boy, in front of Tonle Om Temple. On 08/06/2007, Friends team, in collaboration with DSAVY Siem Reap, Police district and the chief of my village, helped me and brought me to Friends office, in order to cure me and reintegrated me back to my family. On the other hand, my father was put under high pressures, and the authority asked him to sign a promise, so he can not torture me later and let me stay with Friends-International Siem Reap and cure myself.
I am so happy to meet with Friends-International Siem Reap, especially, that all the staffs supported me during my staying with them. |
